RCEs Educating in Regions for Sustainable Development

Our World 2.0 is a new web magazine for the United Nations University. It covers the inter-connected issues of climate change, peak oil and food security. The focus is on critical analysis of what is going on and the introduction of innovators/innovations designed to transition this world to a low carbon, post fossil fuel reality.

We are always looking out for interesting articles. If you have a story that you think may fit, why not send me a short pitch. Here is what we are looking for.

KNOWING THE OURWORLD 2.0 ONLINE COMMUNITY

The most important thing to keep in mind when drafting your piece is that our online community is global. At present, OurWorld is attracting, on average, 17,000 readers per month and growing fast. Most click in from developed countries such as the US, Japan and the UK. However, this will diversify as our profile evolves. Importantly, many of our readers are not native English speakers and are therefore not familiar with colloquial, academic or abstract expression. Our World 2.0 is also a platform for conversation between the UN and the public. We encourage public participation through online comments and collaboration through existing networking and video sites, such as Facebook and Vimeo.

In connecting with our readers, we often ask ourselves the blunt, but useful question: “So what?” In other words, why should people care about this innovation, if at all? Your ideas should inspire people to learn and bring about change in their own lives through actions that benefit them in terms of their money, lifestyle and health. For a good idea of what style of articles we publish, we recommend that you check out our recent contributions.

WRITING GUIDELINES

Before our editors ensure your story is ready to publish, we would like your submission to:
• Be a maximum of 1000 words long
• Be written in a friendly journalistic style but be based on substantive argument
• Link directly to one or more of the website themes: food, climate or oil
• Explore the challenge before identifying then discussing innovative solutions
• Focus on a few key messages: remember, “more is less”!
• Use positive, attractive and direct language to entertain and engage the readers
• Include (if requested by an Our World editor) about 100 words each on how this innovation can benefit people in terms of their 1) money 2) lifestyle and 3) health
• Include personal stories and quotes, eg. about designers of new eco-products
• Use hyperlinks to cite web sources, and related information (rather than repeat them)
• Avoid large, complex sentences — keep it short, sharp and simple
• Avoid use of the passive tense
• Avoid most acronyms, colloquialisms, expressions, academic and scientific jargon
• Include a short biography of no more than 80 words
